The United States of Bullies
A few years back when the media was first focusing on bullying in schools I have to admit I balked at this campaign. I was bullied and knew kids who were bullied mercilessly at school every day for years and we didn’t kill ourselves or require years of therapy. Bullying in school is as old as school lunch! I thought something must be wrong with kids today that they can’t take a little bullying and just move on.
That was a short-sighted opinion to say the least. Firstly, my generation didn’t know anything about cyberbullying. And there wasn’t a shortage of teachers when I was in school nor was there all this politically correct red-tape that keeps today’s educational staff from putting kids respectfully in their place. So in school kids can now get away with more deviant behaviors and on the internet teachers have no authority anyway so that anonymity creates a perfect storm for those who seek to bully others.
And what has become more apparent to me over the last year is that we have become a country of bullies. You cannot express an opinion that is not politically correct or outside of the mainstream without being harassed. When Bruce Jenner transitioned, there were celebrities that openly stated on Twitter that though they wished him well, they did not believe in transitioning. And they were berated and attacked by people calling them bigots.
A Yale professor refused to say that a fellow professor’s email about costumes on campus was racist and a small mob of minority students called him names and said he was disgusting. And when he tried to shake students’ hands, he was violently pushed away though he stood there and listened calmly to their complaints despite being verbally attacked and physically intimidated.
Phil Robertson was suspended from his own reality TV show for saying that the Bible speaks against homosexuality. HGTV cancelled a new show starring the Benham brothers before it even aired because someone leaked they were Christian conservatives who did not support gay marriage.
People who don’t believe in gay marriage or gender neutral bathrooms are called all kinds of bigots even when they clearly refer back to the Bible as the the source for their belief.
Black Lives Matter has spawn White Lives Matters and Blue Lives Matter and Women’s Live Matter and who knows what else because everyone is just down right offended at what everyone else is saying.
And we cannot forget that the 2016 Republican presidential candidate has, over the last 6 months, belittled, threatened and attacked various religions, countries and ethnicities all in the name of making America great again.
But America will only be great again when we turn our hearts back to God. We will be stronger and ready for what the end times hold when we get off Twitter and Facebook and turn off the reality TV shows and talk to our children about grace and mercy. I sometimes struggle in my mind to find a balance between showing compassion but not compromising my beliefs. But God gives us the best example. God shows us great mercy and compassion when we fail, we all fall short of His glory (Romans 3:23). But He doesn’t change the rules because we may struggle with them. He knows as long as we keep trying to live as He prescribed, we will struggle less and sin less.
As a nation we have started to do what is right in our own eyes, changing genders, legalizing gay marriage, divorcing for any reason we want, and disregarding the true purpose of sex and marriage. And all of this has created a nation of bullies. Why? Paul explains it clearly.
“And because they thought it was worthless to acknowledge God, God allowed their own immoral minds to control them. So they do these indecent things. Their lives are filled with all kinds of sexual sins, wickedness, and greed. They are mean. They are filled with envy, murder, quarreling, deceit, and viciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, haughty, arrogant, and boastful. They think up new ways to be cruel. They don’t obey their parents, don’t have any sense, don’t keep promises, and don’t show love to their own families or mercy to others. Although they know God’s judgment that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do these things but also approve of others who do them.” (Romans 1:28-32).
Turn on the news or go on the internet and someone is pushing their agenda. But the only agenda that matters is God’s will for us individually and for this nation. I call on all the intercessors out there to pray for the United States without ceasing. And individually, let’s be kind to one another. Speak the truth in love and follow God with all your heart. Be blessed!
