Something More Powerful Than Your Vote
Just days before the 2016 US Presidential election, the thing that stands out for me is how so many people are saying, “How did we get here?” “How did we end up with these two?”
They haven’t been asleep for the last six months, and many actually voted in the primaries but as a nation, even if you are comfortable with your choice, we all are doing a collective, “Huh?”
Many have blamed 2016, saying it has just sucked. We have lost so many cultural icons this year it’s amazing to think about. We’ve been faced with terror attacks all over the world that have taken so many lives. Then there’s police brutality and a refocus on racism in America. And we end the year with one of the most poorly run, unprofessional presidential elections in history. Thanks 2016.
But blaming 2016 for all this is like blaming Obama for the recession. The Bush administration set things up for the great recession and it didn’t matter who took office after him, the recession was going to happen. So America has made some decisions in the last decade that came back to visit in 2016. That’s all.
Debating and fighting and bullying aren’t going to solve anything. I don’t believe we need to make America great again. I believe we need to make America united again. And that’s going to happen in a place of prayer and humility before God. I call on all the intercessors out there to take your place on the wall and pray for the United States of America, literally. I mean that the states and people of this country would unite again before God. We pray without ceasing for this nation because even worse will come if we don’t repent and change our ways.
Psalm 33:12 tells us the nation that belongs to God is blessed! Psalm 11:3 asks the question, “When the foundations of life are undermined, what can a righteous person do?” The psalmist’s answer is to take refuge in God (Psalm 11:1). That’s all we can do.
Pray for all our leaders on every level.
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
I know you have been hearing a lot about how powerful your vote is but I have to take this opportunity to tell you that your prayers are more powerful that your vote, your money or your opinion. In fact, the most powerful thing you possess is your faithful prayer.
“ . . . . .The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16).
“Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:5-7).
“So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24).
So I employ everyone to pray effectively for this election and this country. You have the power to change things!
