A Matter of Give and Take
Not since 9/11 has this country been in such deep turmoil, at least in my lifetime anyway. People are fearful, angry and it feels like this nation is quietly on the verge of all out panic. The difference is that 9/11 came from the outside. For many, this feels like a betrayal from within.
And while we all share this experience as Americans, it is distinctly different on other levels for each of us as women, minorities, immigrants, and Christians just to name a few ways we identify ourselves.
But thankfully, there is one place we can all find what we need to get through this turbulent time: the Word of God. With a little give and take, you can find the strength you need to move forward and even inspire others to live a more purposeful life in the face of uncertainty.
Shortly before He was crucified, Jesus told the disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27).
That’s the give. Jesus gave us peace; He left it here for us knowing that in this life we will need His peace, not the world’s peace. A peace from God that goes beyond human understanding that guards our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7).
Jesus also told His disciples to take courage (Mark 6:50). The Bible doesn’t tell us to ask for courage or seek courage but simply tells us to take it. When you need courage, you just have to take it.
So with a little give and take, you will be equipped to face this ever-changing world. Of course, to get what’s being given and take what’s available, you need to make Jesus your Lord and Savior.
Paul highlights the error of worshipping the created over the Creator (Romans 1:25). While we need God’s peace and courage, that’s just it, we must get them from God and we do that through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
So make your relationship with Jesus a priority right now, the world is too risky to wait. And don’t forget that you just need a little give and take!
