Your Allegiance Matters
It seems that almost every day there’s an article or news report targeting Christians who support President Trump. I have to admit there are some policies and conversations that come out of the White House that raise my eyebrows when I see Christian leaders support them. I have been quite open about my concern as to why the Church is not united on who God really wants in the White House.
But I question whether America has a political party that reflects the teachings of Christ. Are we biblically correct when we align ourselves with a political party? I understand that some Christians may have a God-given assignment in politics but for the rest of us, are we right to pledge allegiance to a political party? For those Christians who vote, what’s the best practice? Should we ask God who to vote for regardless of political party? Why does it even matter?
It matters because we fall under the blessings or curses of those we align ourselves with.
The Bible tells us, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice;
But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” (Proverbs 29:2).
This means that we are influenced by the spiritual state of those with authority over us including fathers, husbands, politicians, law enforcement, pastors, etc. That is why the Bible tells us to pray for those in authority so that we ourselves may have peace.
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
So, when we blindly align ourselves with a political party, we become subjected to their spiritual issues. And just like generational curses are passed down through families, curses can be passed down through the generations of a business, organization, or political party.
I failed to see that any current political party in American clearly reflects the teachings of Christ. While Republicans are typically against abortion and gay marriage, there is some bootstrapping mentality (the idea that people can pick themselves up) in the party that causes the party as a whole to cut funding on assistance programs that the Democrats typically support.
God is adamant that the poor, the orphan and the widow be cared for so always targeting those groups for cuts doesn’t reflect God’s will. God called out Nebuchadnezzar for his neglect of the poor and we all know what happened to him (Daniel 4)!
Republicans were behind the War on Drugs which systematically tore apart poor families and placed a disproportionate number of poor, brown men and women into the penal system, some for decades. But on the flipside, Democrats have supported a decades long crusade to redefine marriage as inclusive of all sexual preferences.
As Christians, it is dangerous to align ourselves with anything or anyone outside of God. If you vote, please ask God to lead you so you are in His will. Being a card-carrying Republican or Democrat is dangerous to your spiritual health. Instead be a God-hearing Believer! Be blessed!
