The Sins of the Father
The son of former Washington D.C. mayor Marion Barry died in August 2016. Like his father before him, he struggled with drug addiction and died of an overdose at 36 years old. Almost everyone will throw the phrase, “The sins of the father. . . “ at this one. Simply because the young man witnessed his father’s drug abuse and how it impacted his political career first hand. Plus, it’s drugs. Drugs are bad.
But I want us to consider those things, those proclivities that we can pass on to our children that are not so obvious or as readily categorized as bad. Most kids grow up with their parents and see behaviors and hear opinions straight from the horse’s mouth and of course we pick up those behaviors and attitudes simply because of exposure. My mom was deathly afraid of thunder and lightning so for years after moving on my own I still turned off all the electronics and sat still until the storm passed because that is what I saw her do not because I understand why I should be afraid. Eventually though I understood that I just took on her phobia and was able to let it go.
But there is a whole other side to what we do and say that we subject our children to that we often don’t think about. But the Bible clearly tells us that the consequences of our sins can fall upon our children.
“ . . . for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me” (Exodus 20:5).
It is easy to see things like drug addiction or alcoholism running through families but that’s not all there is to be concerned about. Sexual promiscuity has taken quite a toll on American society. And the sins of the fathers are visiting the children. We must consider that there is some spiritual root to why this country has a skyrocketing divorce rate and millions of children being born to single parents. There is a whole generation of kids with learning disabilities that used to be blips on the educational radar. The number of children born with autism has increased significantly over the last 30 years. And now in recent years we as a nation face children struggling with gender identify and homosexuality before they are even teenagers and many are committing suicide.
It is not always what your children see you do that can hinder them but it can be choices you made before you even thought of having them. I know society tells women to be sexually empowered but consider that your sexual liberty can lead your daughter into prostitution, abusive relationships or even sexual identity issues. Not to mention the consequences you yourself will have to deal with in your body and your soul. Is it worth the risk?
Bruce Jenner “secretly” struggled with his sexual identity and throughout the years contemplated surgery. But his daughter Kylie started having plastic surgery at a young age and is almost unrecognizable compared to her younger, natural appearance. The demonic oppression of her father comes against her as well. Though she may not express sexual identify issues she clearly has body issues to the point that she has altered her body which at its base is what her father did.
So we must face our issues and our sins and seek a real relationship with God so that we can break the curse and protect our children and their children. Generational curses are very real but Jesus Christ took away the sting and all we have to do is make Him our Savior and walk upright before the Lord and serve Him. Live like God prescribed and not how society says you should. You’ll set an example for your children in the natural and in the spirit.
