The Real Blessing
Hannah is one of the most interesting women in the Bible (1 Samuel). She is barren but her husband favors her over his other wife who has given him children. But his other wife, Peninnah, pokes fun at Hannah for being barren. This happened year after year when the family went up to Shiloh to worship the Lord. Hannah would always end up in tears, refusing to eat.
Then one year, Hannah went up to the temple and prayed fiercely. I mean she was praying so hard for a child that Eli the priest thought she was drunk! Now here’s where it gets interesting. She tells Eli that if God would give her a child she would give the child back to the Lord. And sure enough God opened her womb and she had a son named Samuel. And the moment he was weaned, she sent him to live with Eli for the rest of his life serving in the presence of God.
Hannah wanted a child so bad and she got the child only to give the child back to the Lord. Samuel went to live as a little boy in the temple. Hannah didn’t get to raise him herself; which seems so strange because she begged God to give her the child. But Hannah understood something about God that many of us miss. Sometimes the real blessing is in the ability to do something rather than in possessing the end product.
Someone I know was asking God for a house and the Lord told her that He gave her the ability to get houses even though at that moment she would have certainly preferred Him to tell her that He was giving her a house. But the ability was better because she got the house she wanted but was able to buy another house to run an outreach ministry out of and now as she prepares to grow her family and her ministry, she has this God-given ability that will help her obtain new real estate.
We look around at what we have that we can see or what we have that a bank can quantify and it may not be much. But the real power, the real value is in what we have that we cannot readily see. Hannah wanted the ability to have a child and she gave that child to God so he could become a powerful figure in the history of the Israelites. God wants us to look to the abilities He has given us to grow the Kingdom. If you can get a prayer through to God, that ability is your true blessing. God may give you the ability to get wealth and use you to disperse the wealth throughout the Kingdom. He may give you to ability to get real estate so that you can disperse that real estate throughout the Kingdom while you live in an apartment! You may have decades of sales experience, owned a business, you may be good with computers. Whatever it is, offer that skill to your church. Use those skills in your ministry.
It is not about the end product so just give that back to God like Hannah did. Take the ability you have been given and build the Kingdom and God will make sure your every need is met!
