The Only King That Matters
The world is abuzz with the success of the Black Panther movie. While the success of the movie is beyond anything having to do with race, race is a topic. Some of the movie’s actors recently spoke about how the movie is important to African American youth because they need to know that they come from kings and queens.
The Israelites come from kings and queens too but ask them what is most important for them to know and they will likely tell you that it is the fact that they are God’s chosen people. The kings and queens often led them into sin and destruction but it was God’s promises and love that has delivered and kept them for centuries.
God hates idolatry (Exodus 20:3) and wants every human being to have the opportunity to see and to choose to believe that He is the only true God. Israel was constantly reminded of this through captivity. Kings of other nations, like Nebuchadnezzar, were reminded of this through their own encounter with God designed to encourage humility (Daniel 4). I do not believe the kings and queens of Africa were any different. Ancient Africa was a pagan continent and those fabulous, highly developed kingdoms all fell and parts of Africa have never truly recovered their wealth or status. But as any traveling preacher will tell you, in Africa they know how to praise God! They do it like no other people. In the fall of those kingdoms, the people discover Jehovah and cast away their idols.
And just like the Holocaust brought many Jews to Jesus, the slave trade converted thousands of Africans to Christianity, a legacy you see every Sunday morning in churches across America. There are classic hymns that started out being sung as people labored in the cotton field. Songs that are anointed right now today. Because many slaves felt all they had was God and they praised Him even in the midst of captivity.
And that is what young people of every race and ethnicity need to know. They need to know they come from people who turned away from idolatry to serve the One, True, Living God, Jehovah. And in this time when classmates will kill them, parents will abandon them, strangers will bully them and bosses will harass them, they need to know there is a God that can save them and protect them. There is a God that will shut the mouth of every bully. There is a God who will make the teachers and educators that have cast them aside as failures already become liars. There is a God who can make a safe place for them when home is not safe.
Who cares about being descended from kings when you can access THE KING right now for what you need in this lifetime. That is what we need to tell our children so they can stop killing themselves and killing each other. Be blessed!
