There is an old Southern tale about a man named Cooter Brown. Basically, he didn’t want to fight for either side in the Civil War so he decided to stay very drunk during the entire war so neither side would consider him fit for service. The story goes that his tactic was successful. Though he got a reputation for being a drunk.
In our walk with Christ though, we must always make a choice. In fact, Jesus specifically speaks about how He’d prefer a choice be made.
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16).
Jesus requires that we make a choice. Whether it be hot or cold, but we can’t play the middle. How do we play the middle? There are many ways. Some of us refuse to go deeper in God and take on responsibility in the kingdom even though God is calling us to serve in an office. We claim we are not qualified but when God calls you, He qualifies you.
We play the middle when we refuse to grow-up and mature in the things of God. I have seen God deliver people and do great things in their lives but somehow, they reclaim or find a new weakness so they always have a crutch, always have an excuse as to why they cannot go higher and deeper in God.
We play the middle when we pick and choose what statutes we like and disregard the ones we don’t like. For example, some people will go to church faithfully, tithe but do not believe that sex before marriage is a sin.
But we can’t keep playing the middle because we do not want Jesus to spit us out. We do not want to be lukewarm but instead we want to be on fire for God. We can’t stay unfit for service like Cooter Brown. We must work to get the healing and deliverance and maturity we need to do all that God has for us to do. And while we will sin, we must daily work to make better decisions moving forward.
So, make a commitment to do at least one thing every day that moves you towards fitness to serve God. You will be amazed at how fast you will grow and mature in the things of God once you make that small commitment!
