The Key to Success
I saw an old saying the other day that read, “The man who has confidence in himself gains the confidence of others.” While on the surface these may seem like words of wisdom, they really aren’t that wise. Humanity is inherently flawed and for that reason the Bible explicitly tells us to lean not on our own understanding and do not trust in man (Proverbs 3:5; Jeremiah 17:5).
Our confidence must be in God. Our confidence must lie in knowing His power and His love for us.
“This is what the LORD says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the LORD who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the LORD, have spoken!” (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
One first has to realize that all we have from the material things to our state of being are all due to God. Whatever we have belongs to Him. As Paul further reiterates in the New Testament, all we have to boast about is what God has done through Christ (2 Corinthians 10).
But Jeremiah asks us to go deeper and acknowledge that it is our relationship with God that matters the most. We can boast in truly knowing God and understanding who He truly is to us.
Having confidence in God gains the confidence of others. People will just be drawn to you. David was a young man called to be king of Israel and as he journeyed to the throne, people were drawn to him and declared him their leader so that by the time David actually took the throne as king, he already had a core following of men and their families. They were drawn to David’s confidence in God.
If you struggle with low self-esteem, shyness, or lack of confidence pray and ask God to deliver you from these stumbling blocks. And tell Him that your relationship with Him is the only thing of value and it’s the only thing you want to boast about.
God will enable you to do things well and He can touch you in a way that people will follow you as a leader and He will give you wisdom to share. So you don’t have to worry about building confidence in yourself. Take that time and energy and build your relationship with God. It is the key to real success.
