The Faith of God
Oprah Winfrey was recently on Ellen DeGeneres’ show. And they talked briefly about stuff they can’t do any more like pump their own gas or go to the bank. Oprah revealed she recently went to the bank to deposit a check just for the experience because it had been years since she did it. Celebrity is such in this world that you get all these people who do everyday stuff for you. Someone, somewhere decided that celebrity status meant you should not have to do your own banking, pump your own gas or even pick-up your own groceries.
I think there is something a bit flawed with this model of celebrity because the Master of the universe, the Creator of all things, God Himself, never actually asks us to do anything He doesn’t do Himself.
God is a tither and He tithed before He asked us to do it (Malachi 3:10). He created the Israelites as a type of tithe and then within them He took the priests to Himself as a tithe of the tithe. And in the end He will take another tithe, call the remnant, out of the Church.
The Christian life is full of sacrifices but God gave the ultimate sacrifice in giving His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross (John 3:16). So when we agonize over something we have to give up for God, know that He has given up something for us first.
God makes the choice to use us to carry out His master plan of salvation but through His Word and through revelation we can easily see that God doesn’t ask us to do anything He hasn’t done. He gives us an example and a hope that we too can fulfill His will.
If you are struggling in faith and losing heart about something, be encouraged. You are not believing by yourself. God would not ask you to have faith if He Himself didn’t also have to have faith in His own words.
God said, “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11).
God has faith in His own Word and He’s just asking you to have that same faith. You are not in it alone but instead you are believing alongside the Creator . I’m glad He is not a celebrity in the human sense. I am glad that His greatness transcends any human, manmade title. Aren’t you?
