Rest and Get Blessed
When asked what’s the hardest thing for you to do in your life, many people will say eat right or exercise. And some will say stop smoking or cut down on alcohol. But what most of us really struggle with and do not often realize it is resting. It is hard for us to rest.
Most people work 20-40 hours a week or more. Weekends get sucked up doing errands or chores. And if you have kids, forget it. Any free moment of your day is spent shuffling kids from one activity to the other. And then there are all those people who take care of a sick loved one.
Technology has increased our entertainment options but entertainment doesn’t equal rest. Technology has also completely re-shaped the work world. Small business owners and work-from-home employees often find themselves working after 5 pm and before 9 am and on weekends and checking email on holidays because it comes right to the phone. You have to look at it, right?
The other day, I felt a little overwhelmed with work and ministry for a few moments because I was under the weather. I rebuked myself and said that God always has something that needs to be done for someone.
Then the Holy Spirit gently reminded me that even God rested on the seventh day. He’s God, He doesn’t sleep or slumber but the Bible says that on the seventh day He rested from His work (Genesis 2:2).
And then when He was setting forth for Israel how they should live, God tells them too to rest on the seventh day.
“Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest, so that your ox and your donkey may have relief, and your homeborn slave and the resident alien may be refreshed.” (Exodus 23:12).
Jesus said that the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27). So why have we abandoned the idea of resting? It’s clearly something that God deems important to our human existence. So I make the challenge that we all seek to rest more.
Disconnect and let your friends and family refresh themselves. Teachers and parents, while activities and homework are important, it is also important to let kids rest so they can grow up to be balanced adults.
Embrace rest! I know life is crazy for us all so schedule time to rest if you have to, but please rest. I truly believe there is a great blessing in following this command from God. Rest and get blessed!
