On the Other Side of Trouble
Jason Pagett was brutally mugged over a decade ago. His attackers beat and kicked him mercilessly, and he was almost certain he would die. But Jason miraculously survived. He did suffer a brain injury but his injury actually made him a math genius. Before the attack, he was a college dropout but after the attack he became a math genius and one of the only persons in the world able to draw a visual representation of Pi. He didn’t study math in college and couldn’t even draw before the accident. But now he can see fractals in everyday life. It’s a math thing to advance for me to even try to understand or explain.
While Jason’s story is an extreme example, it is an example to us nonetheless. It is often through the bad things that happen that we discover our gifts, talents, and callings. I mean, to get the olive oil out, the olives have to be crushed, right? That’s what happens to us but we must decide to look at that way. We get caught up in what is happening to us and can lose sight of the takeaway.
Depression stripped me of my sense of future. I was in college when I suffered a severe, long lasting bout of anxiety and depression. I couldn’t go to class and I while I kept the same major the whole time, I changed career goals over and over. I was so defeated by depression that I didn’t complete my pre-med credits and I didn’t qualify for any abroad programs. At graduation, I was able to get a job but I had no idea what I wanted as a career. But suffering through that depression led me to my real purpose. It was when I hit rock bottom and felt like I was literally going to lose my mind that I heard about a Man called Jesus. And I never looked back. I now know enough about what God has for me to do to have purpose and to keep going no matter how hard things get.
But it took suffering through anxiety, depression, rejection and losing opportunities to get there. Whatever you have gone through or are going through, take your attention off of the pain and look for the purpose. Because on the other side of what is happening, your gifts, talents and real value are waiting to come forth.
That’s what the Bible means when it says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28).
All things, the good, the bad, the ugly, work together for the good of who God made you to be, just soldier through in His strength and get to the other side. And then become. Become blessed, become anointed, become healed. Become powerful. Become loved. God bless you!
