Living Through Your Mistakes
Actor Mark Wahlberg recently stated that he prays God will forgive him for his role in Boogie Nights, a critically acclaimed film about the porn industry in the 1970’s. Ironically, it was a breakout role from Wahlberg and he received great critic reviews. However, decades later, he says it is one of the worse career choices he ever made and he hopes God will forgive him.
That is not something we hear from Hollywood very often, especially when the film was well received by critics. But as he has grown in age and his relationship with God, Wahlberg realized his choice to do that film was questionable due to its content. It takes growth and maturity to look at your choices and realize where you missed the mark and then to feel genuine repentance for your mistake is another level of growth.
We don’t have to live with our mistakes; we only need to live through them. Living with mistakes makes it too easy to repeat them but living through them means getting to the other side of our mistakes to a new beginning.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).
God tells us that He will no longer remember our sins and He will cast them into a sea of forgetfulness (Hebrews 10:17; Micah 7:19).
So you have the chance to move passed your mistakes, no matter how big they seem. First, make Jesus your Lord and Savior. This one decision sets you up for making better decisions moving forward in life. It also gives you access to God’s forgiveness through confession and repentance.
I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed every day if I didn’t have God’s forgiveness and promise of purification and a fresh start every day. We get new mercies every morning (Lamentations 3:23). Without Him, every day I would have to wake up to my own inability to move past my mistakes let alone other people who wouldn’t let me live down my mistakes. So I am so grateful for God’s forgiveness. I am grateful for the clean slate I get when I confess and truly repent from my heart for my sins.
So don’t keep living with your mistakes. Get the clean slate the cross provides for you!
