Leaving the Comfort Zone
I was surprised to learn that there are dozens of flightless birds in the world and a lot of them actually have wings and/or feathers. Scientists postulate that over time as they migrated to different areas and the threat of certain predators decreased, the birds flew less and then biology caught up and their offspring displayed changed morphology that was not conducive to flight. Flying takes a lot of energy so birds basically will not fly unless they have to and for some species this behavior changed their biology over time and they became flightless like emus and kiwis.
Laziness is clearly very dangerous. It technically caused some birds to lose the ability to fly. Now I know that is an extreme characterization but we need to understand just how dangerous laziness is to our development.
“A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things.” (Proverbs 18:9).
“Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work.” (Proverbs 21:25).
“For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:23-25).
Many of these bird species realized that they could escape their predators by staying in a certain area and using other body parts to fight so that they would not have to fly because flying caused them to use a lot of energy. Well, many times we get in a comfort zone in life and we figure out how to survive without expending much energy. But Jesus didn’t die on the cross for us to just survive. He died and was resurrected so that we could excel. So that we could have abundant life (John 10:10)! So we could live outside of a comfort zone and live in the faith zone!
When we fail to accept the growth opportunities God presents us with, we risk stifling gifts, talents and abilities that we need to live a successful life but more important they are needed to build the kingdom and collect a harvest of souls for God.
We must stop sitting on our gifts, talents and abilities and don’t be deceived by laziness. DON’T LOSE YOUR ABILITY TO FLY! Do everything your hands find to do for God. He knows how to energize you and strengthen you, just trust Him. We all need what He has stored in you! So, let it out!
