Human Weakness. Divine Strength.
People are disappointing. It’s just a fact of life. I have been disappointed and I have disappointed others. You have been disappointed and well you have also disappointed others. We were designed that way. It can be the big things like spousal cheating or it can be a slight thing like always being late for dinner. As much as we love someone, they can still disappoint us with their decisions and choices. And often we cause disappointment to others and we don’t even realize it.
But this human flaw is necessary because it shows us how much we need God, the only Perfect One. God in fact warns us not to trust in flesh.
“This is what the LORD says: ‘Cursed is the person who trusts humans, who makes flesh and blood his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.’” (Jeremiah 17:5).
So we have the warning from God that if we trust only in flesh, we will encounter disastrous results. This doesn’t mean to be suspicious of people it means do not put your faith in flesh, do not believe that a mere human being will solve your problems. We must acknowledge that though God uses humans to fulfill His will, ultimately He is at work in all things.
We are not perfect, we will disappoint others but a disciplined life in Christ helps us to make better decisions and to treat others better so they can see God’s grace and love through our living. That way of living allows us to forgive others quickly when they disappoint us and gives us the compassion to pray for them.
The weakness of humans shows us our need for a divine, perfect God.
“But He [God] said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9; emphasis mine).
We are not to use those weaknesses to judge others or ourselves but instead to grasp the depth of a perfect God. He is never late. Never cheats. Never lies. Never fails.
We can easily put so many more expectations on people than on God. But God is the perfect One. He’s the One we need to rely on. When humans fail us we can get caught in bitterness and unforgiveness but what a deception because those people never had the answer we needed in the first place. It has always been and will always be God who has everything we need! Be blessed!
