Hear It. Read It. Grab It.
Mum Bett was the first Black slave to file and win a freedom suit in Massachusetts thereby making slavery unconstitutional in the state of Massachusetts in 1781.
The Massachusetts constitution, article 1 clearly states: “All men are born free and equal, and have certain natural, essential, and unalienable rights; among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties; that of acquiring, possessing, and protecting property; in fine, that of seeking and obtaining their safety and happiness.”
Despite this fact, slavery was legal in the state. Until in 1780 when Mum Bett went to a public reading of the constitution and heard the words above. She found a lawyer and filed suit believing that those words in that constitution applied to her. She won her freedom, helped to abolish slavery in her state and changed her name to Elizabeth Freeman.
This is proof of how powerful our belief can be. If we hear or read something, and make the decision to believe it, that belief can create a movement. That’s why the Bible is a must read. Even if you are not a Christian, I still challenge you to read the Bible. It is after all as much a historical text as it is spiritual.
When I began to read the Bible I found in it proof that I did not have to suffer with depression. Depression was a curse over my life but the Bible told me that all I had to do was make a choice. That God had set before me the choice of being cursed or being blessed, death or life. The medication didn’t work. The therapist didn’t work. The spiritualist didn’t work. Nothing worked. So I sat there tired of being depressed and made the choice of the blessing call Jesus Christ. And since that day, no matter what I have been faced with, I hold on to the belief that my choice of the blessing has set me free from the curse (Deuteronomy 30:19).
That’s why I preach the gospel, tell my testimony and write for the Kingdom. Because there is someone out there that needs to hear the truth like Mum Bett heard on that fateful day in Massachusetts.
Whatever you are facing, there is an answer in God’s Word so please pick it up and read it. Ask God to give you the understanding you need. And push past the issues that church people have and go to church to hear the Word preached. Don’t get caught up on them, stay focused on the Word. You don’t want to miss your Mum Bett moment; that message that sets you free.
The Bible tells us, “So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.” (Romans 10:17).
“For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope and overflow with confidence in His promises.” (Romans 15:4).
Search the scriptures, listen to sound preaching. Your liberty is there, just hear it, read it and grab hold of it!
