Good vs Evil
Look at the most popular movie franchises over the last few decades and you will see a commonality. Consider, Star Wars, Rocky, Lord of the Rings, even Indiana Jones. The core concept of these films is the battle between good and evil. Light and darkness. Some of the most beloved movies and books all deal with the conflict between good and evil or light and darkness. Put it on a big screen or a fiction book and we totally get it.
But, in real life we often cannot see this larger picture of good versus evil. With all the tragic, horrific things that we see in the news, we toss it up to an individual being evil or a certain group of people being evil. But there is not a lot of media attention given to the concept that we love to see in the movies. That there is both good and evil in the world and it cannot be quantified.
People can easily believe in the the force but struggle to believe the Holy Spirit is real. It just shows how fallible the human mind and emotions can be. But this desire to understand good versus evil and for most the desire to see good prevail should be our first indicator that there is a greater good that exist.
You were formed by the hand of God and somewhere deep inside each of us we long to know about our Creator. I believe every living person has at least one moment of experiencing this desire.
We are obsessed with good versus evil because it is the premise of why God created us. We have a real enemy and his name is satan. Satan is not like Santa Claus, some made up entity used to keep us on our bestbehavior. No, satan is real and he has a real vendetta against humans.
“One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the Lord, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them. “Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan.
Satan answered the Lord, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.” Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil.” Satan replied to the Lord, “Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God. You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is! But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!” “All right, you may test him,” the Lord said to Satan. “Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.” (Job 1:6-12).
Through Jesus we are freed from the power of sin meaning we can choose good over evil whenever faced with the choice. But we still have to make the choice. So, all around us every day on every level there is a real battle going on between good and evil but in Christ Jesus we have the promise that good will triumph over evil.
Take hold of that promise for yourself. Don’t dismiss satan as a myth or that he has no way to influence you. That is a deception. But through the Lordship of Jesus Christ you have the power to resist satan and all his tactics.
We are fascinated by good versus evil because it is a real battle. The only difference is that in reality good has won through the blood of Jesus Christ. You don’t have to hold your breath and wonder who wins. We already know the outcome and it is in our favor if we are on the side of the Lord!
