A Better Path
Actress and activist Viola Davis recently spoke at a women’s summit stating, “You could go into any prison in this country and, I guarantee you, you could trace it all back to sexual assault,” speaking of women inmates. Her stance and that of many others is that the impact of sexual assault on women can span their lifetime.
It would be shortsighted of me to deny this when it simply is true. Many women who struggle with addiction and criminal lifestyles have suffered sexual assault and most at a young age. But what I want to point out is that the path of criminality and/or addiction is just one path. It is not THE PATH. There is a better path.
We must abandon this idea that we are forever damaged by a trauma or negative event in our life. Man stands out from every other living thing God created because He gave us free will. And the power of free will lies not in controlling what happens but instead in deciding how we respond to what happens.
Sexual assault does expose one to demonic oppression including but not limited to perversion, addiction, and anger just to name a few. But they do not have to reign in one’s life. Through salvation, making Jesus your Lord and Savior, you can be delivered from this demonic oppression. And you can lead a blessed, productive life even if you are in prison right now. Even if you are strung out on drugs right now. Even if you are depressed or suicidal right now.
Though you may feel powerless, you have the power right now where you are to choose to overcome the circumstances of your life through salvation in Christ Jesus.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30).
I can tell you that it is not a vain offer. I took Him up on this and my life changed forever. So, I know it will change yours no matter what struggle you are facing. Your life doesn’t have to be a cautionary tale or a stereotype but instead you have the power to decide to overcome your circumstances and walk in your divine purpose!
